David Dunlop Journeys in Light

David Dunlop, Journeys in Light, is the new exhibition by this acclaimed painter opening at Susan Powell Fine Art in Madison. Join us for the opening reception on Friday, April 22, from 4:00 to 7:00 to meet the artist. The exhibition continues through June 11, 2022.

David will give a talk and painting demonstration in the gallery garden on Saturday, April 23, from 2-3 pm.

In this new series, the paintings are your invitation to see the world from new and unusual perspectives, to feel sunlight as it sparks, reflects, and bounces off water and flora, and diffuses in misty colored atmospheres. The viewer can see the effect of sunlight on the endless range of colors across the natural habitats chosen by the artist. This journey will take you on an adventure through luminous atmospheres, sparking water and tapestries of sunlight. Enter nature from the point of view of a low flying sparrow across a stream, a crane wading in tall marsh grass, a rabbit secreting itself in a wild flowering meadow, a seabird as it takes wing over a tidal marsh, a scuttling crab as it wanders low through a bed of seashells, a hummingbird darting just above our reach into a waking woodland.

Dunlop employs a range of techniques, tools, materials, and designs reaching back to ancient Chinese landscape painting, renaissance glazing techniques, and forward to expressive patterns as found in cloisonné, micro mosaics and stained glass. He is well known for his lively and entertaining PBS series, Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop.

Gallery hours are Tues-Sat, 11am-5pm, and anytime by appointment. For further information, please call (203) 318-0616, or email us at susanpowellfineart@gmail.com
