Jeanne Rosier Smith - Songs of the Seasons

Jeanne Rosier Smith has made her career as a full-time artist for the past twenty years, after earning a PhD in English and teaching American Literature.

“The longer I’ve studied the landscape, the more I appreciate the beauty each season reveals, and relish painting the changes each season brings.  When I paint I'm going for an immersive experience, so I take my plein air work and my time spent in the landscape into the studio with me, and draw on sensory memory as I paint.  I want to share the feeling of misty ocean air in the lungs, the sounds of wind or rustling grasses, the crunch of snow underfoot, the heat of the sun and wet sand on my skin.  Standing in front of my easel, I’m focused on a world of light, color, texture, and rhythms created by sensory memories. Simply taking notice of what’s before our eyes rewards us with awe and wonder.  Finding and appreciating beauty has the power to uplift the spirit.  That breath-catching moment we notice in the natural world connects us to ourselves and to each other," says Jeanne.

Jeanne's solo show celebrates New England's landscapes and seascapes and its dramatic change of seasons, from brilliant light on snow to bursting apple blossoms, to the deep hush of a summer meadow, to incomparable pounding surf, to delicate mist drifting through autumn trees.  Jeanne’s paintings awaken the senses and invite the viewer in with fresh, unexpected expressions of mood and atmosphere.  I am always captivated by Jeanne's handling of light and the luminous way she mixes color on the surface, creating an exhilarating experience. There will be 30 new paintings on view, and this will be Jeanne's first solo show at the gallery.  Jeanne is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America, a Copley Society Master Artist, and a designated Eminent Pastelist with the International Association of Pastel. She is a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists and the American Impressionist Society. She has served as an educational consultant to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she has given demonstrations and gallery talks. Her work has garnered numerous top national awards and been featured in many magazines, and her paintings are collected worldwide.

Join us on Friday October 3, from 5- 8 pm for the opening reception of Jeanne's first solo show at the gallery.  Jeanne will be present to talk about her inspiration and technique, and invites you to walk through the seasons with her.
